Introduction

This bulletin summarizes results of 1996-1999 performance trials of commercial dent corn hybrids being sold in Indiana. The participating seed companies selected the hybrids for testing and mailed samples of seed taken from commercial seed lots to Purdue University for planting and evaluation.

The 1999 Growing Season

The 1999 season has been an interesting one. Early corn planting progessed at a rapid pace in mid April as the wet field conditions of the previous year made people anxious to get planting as soon as the ground was fit. This made for some mid May replanting as growing conditions in late April were less than optimum.

In May conditions improved and corn planting across the state was very timely. Good growing conditions prevailed through most of the month. There were some dry areas in the state but tempatures remained moderate and crops were only slightly stressed.

June continued to be on the dry side except in the south. Timely rains kept the corn crop growing in the rest of the state. A heat wave during the second week of June added additional stress to any late planted corn. June ended in a normal tempature range and with some much needed rain.

In July dry hot conditions persisted in the central and northern regions of the state while southern Indiana continued to receive ample and sometimes excessive rainfall. The month ended with very hot and dry conditions that began to affect yield levels especially in the northeastern part of the state.

August continued to be dry although not quite as hot. Relief came to the central part of the state on the 12th with a 2 inch rain. Corn crops in the southern part of the state continued to be rated very good and the northeast continued to suffer.

Harvest was in full swing by mid September in the south. Many other parts of the state were harvesting by the end of the month. The little rainfall that we recieved came on the 28th unfortunately brought strong wind and hail. Thankfully these strong storms were scattered and only the Agronomy farm suffered severe stalk lodging.
