A firm seedbed is essential. A field should be smooth and not cloddy. It doesn’t have to be totally free of residue. I have gotten desired stands when corn residues are chisel plowed and receive secondary tillage and have seen excellent forage stands when no-till seeding occurred in soybean residue.
