    Not all varieties within a species are alike in quality. The presence of anti-quality constituents like those mentioned affect the intake and performance of the animal consuming the forage.

    There are small differences in quality among alfalfa varieties, but it is not necessarily related to the number of leaflets per leaf [trifoliolate = 3 leaflets per leaf) and multifoliolate is > than 3 leaflets per leaf].
