Rain upon a cut crop readily leaches water soluble carbohydrates and potassium from the forage. Water soluble carbohydrates are easily converted for use as energy by the consuming livestock. When lost, the fiber content increases; therefore, digestibility and intake decline when rain damage occurs.

Relative level of protein in the forage is not negatively effected like energy value.
