Visas
Travelers to Ethiopia must present a valid, current passport and a valid visa to Ethiopian immigration officials in the Addis Ababa airport.

It is recommended that you request a visa through the Ethiopian Embassy in your own country. If your country has no Ethiopian representation, please advise Mrs. Katy Ibrahim at kgi@purdue.edu immediately so we can arrange through the Ethiopian Ministry of Interior to have a visa issued to you on arrival. To facilitate the process, we will provide you with a letter of invitation to the conference.

When completing a conference registration form, do not forget to attach a photocopy of the passport page showing your photo and details. Both the form and the photocopy are essential. We plan to submit a list of conference attendees to the Immigration Office in the Addis Ababa airport to facilitate your entry into Ethiopia.

Vaccinations and Medications

Conference participants should visit a health care provider in their community to discuss travel plans to Ethiopia, assess possible health risks, and determine any necessary vaccinations and medications.

An International Certificate of Vaccination for yellow fever is required for entry into Ethiopia. A four- to six-week period is often recommended between vaccination and travel. That means you should visit your health care provider or public health facility well in advance of the conference for your yellow fever vaccination.

Other vaccinations also may be recommended. For more information on disease risks and recommended medications (including preventative drugs for East Africa), visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Health Information for Travelers to Countries in East Africa page: www.cdc.gov/travel/eafrica.htm.

Transportation from Airport to Hotel
Once the conference participants’ travel itineraries are known, the conference organizing committee will meet conference participants upon arrival in Addis Ababa and assist them at departure in person or via the Hilton shuttle service. The Hilton provides shuttle services at a charge of $3.50 per person each way.

Currency Exchange
The Ethiopian currency is the birr. Major foreign currencies (dollars or euros) can be exchanged at the airport or at the bank located at the hotel. There also are currency exchange offices throughout the city. For information on current currency exchange rates visit www.oanda.com/convert/classic.

Field Trip
A two-day field trip is being planned for after the three days of lectures and meetings. Be sure to bring appropriate gear (sneakers, boots, jeans, polo shirt, head gear, etc.) for traveling during this field visit. The local organizing committee will handle arrangements for transportation, meals, and lodging.
