Think of PURDUE with turf management opportunities. The Turf Program continues to enjoy a strong undergraduate enrollment. This is primarily due to people like yourself keeping us informed of available positions. If you know of an opening please send an announcement to our office so it can be posted for the students; they are interested in employment opportunities in all areas of the country.
Eight turf students will be driving to Orlando to participate in the student activities. There will be two teams competing in the 8th Annual Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition. This will be the first year that a team from Purdue has entered and the students are anxious to be a part of it. Aaron Patton has been coaching the students in preparation for the competition. The students will also attend the Student Chapter Officers Forum to exchange ideas with other chapters.
The search for the position of Assistant Professor of Agronomy, Turfgrass Science, vacated by Clark Throssell, has been reopened. Following the first search, the position was offered to an excellent candidate who after significant consternation decided not to accept the offer. The new search has attracted 15 applicants with a wide variety of strengths. The Search Committee has narrowed the applicants to the 4 most qualified candidates. Interviewing will take place in March and April. This position will have predominantly teaching responsibilities as well as some research and extension duties. The candidates will interview for two days each, presenting a teaching seminar, a research seminar, and meeting with a wide variety of faculty and staff associated with the turfgrass teaching program. As immediate past-president of MRTF, Bob Avenius is serving on the selection committee which is chaired by Zac Reicher. Additionally, all of the members of the MRTF Board of Directors are invited to attend the research seminar as well as spend time with each candidate. If you have questions, please contact Bob Avenius at tgbob@mindspring.com or Zac Reicher at zreicher@purdue.edu. We will keep you posted on the progress.
The Purdue Turf Endowment was established to help develop and secure financial support for research and education in the Turfgrass Science program here at Purdue. It was the vision of the Midwest Regional Turf Foundation to create an endowment that will continue to support the Turf Program and its tradition of excellence for future generations.
The endowment helps to support and develop the Turf Program in many ways. For example, it is currently providing partial funding of a graduate assistantship for Aaron Patton. Aaron comes to Purdue from Iowa State University and he will be researching the establishment of seeded Zoysia and Bermuda grass for golf courses and sports fields in Indiana.
Aaron's assistantship is just one of the many ways the generosity of our alums and constituents has helped to continue the tradition of excellence, that so many have helped build, and has served us well for many years. In the future I will be sending each one of you a letter inviting you to pledge your support for the Purdue Turf Endowment and I hope that you will consider Purdue in your next philanthropic endeavor. If your travels bring you by way of West Lafayette IN and ole Purdue, please stop and visit with us.
