The Turf Program continues to enjoy a strong undergraduate enrollment. In the past 10 years there has been 100% placement of Turfgrass Science Majors at graduation. This is primarily due to people like yourself keeping us informed of available positions. If you know of an opening please send an announcement to our office so it can be posted for the students; they are interested in employment opportunities in all areas of the country.

Leo Schleicher Receives Ph.D.

Leo Schleicher passed his Ph.D. thesis examination on June 6. He accepted a position as Assistant Professor at South Dakota State University and will begin guiding their turf program starting July 1. Congratulations and good luck Leo.

Turf Club Outing

On April 20th the Turf Club sponsored their 3rd Annual Golf Outing. The outing was held at Edwood Glen Country Club where Steve Reynolds (BS 96) is superintendent. The Turf Club members invited Agronomy Department Faculty and local Golf Course Superintendents to join them for a 9-hole scramble tournament and cookout.

Turfgrass Research and Diagnostic Center

Over the last two years we have devoted a significant portion of our time and energy developing and building the Turfgrass Research and Diagnostic Center. Our goal is to create a state-of-the-art field research and education facility. Located on 25 acres adjacent to the Kampen Golf Course (formerly the North Course) this facility will be the focal point for all turfgrass research, education, and extension activities at Purdue. Faculty from the Departments of Agronomy, Horticulture, Entomology, Botany and Plant Pathology, and others will use the facility. To date, we have seeded five acres of turf with plans to establish two more acres of turf this spring. This summer we plan to build two acres of USGA specification putting greens. We also plan to conduct some of our research on the Purdue golf courses in addition to using the golf courses as outdoor classrooms for undergraduate students and extension clientele.

Please return address forms

Earlier an address form, along with a letter, was sent out to all Turf Program graduates in an attempt to update our records. Some were returned by the Post Office because of insufficient address or forwarding order expired. Many were filled out and returned letting us know we reached the right person with our mailing. It was apparent from some of the forms that we had the wrong address, but somehow it was directed to the correct person.

Currently our records indicate there have been 359 graduates of the Turf Science option from the Purdue Agronomy Department. As of now 145 have returned the address forms so that we know they have been reached.
