Yellow Woodsorrel (Oxalis stricta): A native perennial belonging to the family oxalidaceae. In the Lafayette, IN. area yellow woodsorrel can sometimes act like an annual do to weather related stresses. The plant is supported by a shallow tap root. The slender, branching stem is sparsely hairy. The leaves are divided into three heart-shaped leaflets. Due to the oxalic acid content the leaves have a bitter or sour taste. Flowers are made up of five conspicuous bright yellow petals.Cucumber shaped seed pods, 1/2 to 1 inch long and having 5 sides, are formed as the flower matures. When dry the seed pods have a triggering mechanism that expels the seeds in all directions from the slightest touch. Plants reproduce from seed. Usually occurs on moist fertile sites.
