Violets (Viola spp.): Perennial or annual belonging to the Violet family (violaceae). A native group of plants that can be difficult to distinguish between because some freely hybridize. Plants arise from a dense, fibrous root system. Leaves are heart shaped and regularly lobed along the edges. Flowers have five petals and are pansy-like appearing in early spring. All violets can reproduce from seed and the perennial types also from rootstalks. Grow best in moist, fertile, cool, shady areas.
