Ryegrass |
|
Ryegrass is a very fine textured grass that has blades with shiny undersides, two characteristics that make it very desirable for use as turf grass. Ryegrass germinates and establishes very quickly and thus provides a quick cover on areas that are susceptible to erosion. However, it is short-lived and somewhat difficult to mow. In Germany and other parts of Europe, ryegrass is used extensively as both a pasture and turf grass. |

Ryegrass has a two-ranked inflorescence in that seeds grow from both sides of the rachis (center stalk). |
The seed of ryegrass looks very similar to the seed of Tall fescue however, the rachilla of ryegrass has a flattened wedge shape while the rachilla of Tall fescue is more rounded and swollen in appearance. |
