Tall fescue is a perennial grass that spreads by seeds only. It is a very coarse textured grass that grows in clumps or bunches. It is recommended for use as turf grass in areas that receive a lot of traffic. Tall fescue has been used for pastures especially in areas of southern Indiana. One drawback of using Tall fescue for pasture is that livestock do not find it very palatable and will eat it only when there are no other plants left to graze. | ![]() |

The seed of Tall fescue is brown in color and about a half centimeter long. It retains its hulls as it threshes. The easiest way to identify the seed is to look at its rachilla. The rachilla of Tall fescue is a small round structure laying along one side of the seed that will appear to be swollen at one end. This is especially useful for telling the difference between Tall fescue seed and ryegrass seed. |
