Poison ivy is a perennial plant that is detrimental to humans but really has no substantial effect on livestock. The entire plant is poisonous because of the oil which it exudes. | ![]() |

If this oil gets on the skin it may cause agonizing, itchy, rash. If the oil is washed off the skin before it soaks in (about 15 minutes) it will usually not cause this rash. Poison ivy grows generally as a shrub or vine but can but can develop woody stems and grow up the sides of the trees. The seed of poison ivy develops in small, round, white berries that can be seen late in autumn. |
An identifying characteristic of poison ivy is that each leaf is composed of three shiny leaflets. | ![]() |
